Set free the devil inside
Nowadays 3D-action games are not uncommon on mobile phones but I have
to admit I never played one with better graphics on my mobile phone.
Capcom created a furious action adventure by transferring “Devil May
Cry” onto mobile phones. Dante shoots and cuts demons like he has never
done anything else (and probably he really never has). Even the
controllings, often a problem in 3D games work –more or less- proper.
On the one hand there is an auto-aim which makes it easier to hit
enemies, but on the other hand it only works when you are standing near
enough to them, so it is not getting too easy. Nearly 50 levels where
included, and although most of them are only one room, you will take
some time to finish the game as you have to work through a few times to
raise your stats and become good enough to defeat the bosses, e.g.
“Cerberus” whose three heads need a very good skills with the guns
(unless you are no thumb crack).
The player can not only upgrade and equip Dantes “Devil arms” (whereby
his sword is meant), and “Guns” but also his style of fighting. By
selecting Dante either being a “Swordmaster” or a “Gunslinger”, the
damage caused by the preferred weapon increases and further some kind
of super attack becomes available for it. You will often need a
different style of fighting to pass a certain level successfully. In
total there are six weapons available.
To avoid getting bored by “pimp my Dante” you do not always have to
play the same levels but make your own path on a map and unlock new
levels. After mastering a room (or better say a level) you are asked if
you want to go upstairs or downstairs, left or right, choose the blue
or the red door, etc. And depending on your choice your way will lead
you through other rooms. Many doors can only be opened if you performed
very well in the room before and did not get hit or all enemies where
killed within a very small amount of time.
The plot is as stupid as it sounds like and is merely restricted to one
or two sentences in which Dante, who reminds me a little bit of
“Christina” from the Xbox game “Dead or Alive”, opens another door. But
you can trust me on this, you will not realize this as you will be
completely focused on collecting points to level up. Of course, like in
every 3D game there are still a few bugs remaining and sometimes Dante
seems not to be willing to obey your thumb. Nevertheless “Devil May
Cry” is a milestone in the history of mobile gaming and deserves its
award, as it has got not only stunning graphics, but also an addictive
gameplay mix consisting of classic action and some RPG elements.
