Taking screenshots or screen captures is an important aspect of
working on ant device, let it be on computer or hand held mobile phones.
Screenshots helps you to capture important activities and hence you
can save them for future reference such as showing them to friends and
family or making a tutorial/presentation to perform some specific job.
Now, if you have a Symbian S60v3 or S60v5 phone this work can be easily done with ScreenSnap.
It is a free Symbian application that works well with both V3 and V5
handsets. Though there are many such applications available today in the
market but among the free ones this is the best I have ever used. Lets take a look on the various features that makes working with it easier.
Shortcut Key
This option allows you to configure the key to capture screen. By
default it is set to the camera button, but you can easily change it to
any key of your choice. This will help you to prevent camera
functionality from stopping while ScreenSnap is active.
Delay
This is an important option that helps you to set delay in time from
when the screen should be captured after the capture button is pressed.
Time set for delay is in seconds.
Image Type
From here you can determine the quality of image that will be
captured and hence its size will depend. There are various image formats
that you can choose like BMP- true colors, BMP- 256 colors, Jpeg- low
quality, Jpeg- medium quality and Jpeg- High quality.
Action
This option allows you to determine the action to be taken when the
capturing is done. You can either save the image or send it to other
devices through message, bluetooth
or even upload it. This sending option comes immediately after the snap
is taken, hence is very useful as you do not have to open the image
location to send it if you want to send it to someone just after taking.
Base file name
Here you can specify the base file name that will be used to name
every captured image in sequence. The default name is scr and can be
changed to anything of your choice.
Storage
Select the storage medium for the captured image. It can be changed between Phone memory and Memory card.
Folder
From here you can specify folder in which images will be saved, by default imaged are saved in E:\images\ScreenSnap folder, where e: is your memory card.
After you are set with all these options press the Hide button, this
will make ScreenSnap work in background and you can press the configured
shortcut key anytime to capture the screen. Capture is notified by a
click sound. ScreenSnap is a fast application and you can take
simultaneous snaps with out any lag or jerk. It only takes about 1MB of Phone RAM to run.
Previous version of ScreenSnap
i.e V1.0 had a bug of capturing landscape mode screen in S60V5 phones,
but version 2.0 has improved in this aspect and now you can make good
quality landscape snapshots in no time. Other thing that I tried to do
is taking screenshots of game screens but I found that the captured
screen was blank other than this the application can be included as a must have for all Symbian users.
I will also recommend to have this application pinned to the shortcut bar on the home screen. This will allow you to access the application faster.
